Neutral vs Imprint Spine – Important Pilates Basics
Once you read this page answer the questions on the sheet given by your physiotherapist at M Physio and bring that to your next treatment session.
What is a neutral spine?
Refers to a natural curve of your lumbar spine. When lying on your back there should be a small natural curve in the lower back. Make sure this curve is not too large or forced, or too small and flattened out. There will be specific exercisers that will require you to have a neutral spine.
What is an imprint spine?
Refers to your spine being flat against the ground by engaging your abdominals. Make sure your tailbone is still in contact with the ground while you slowly flatten each vertebrae of your spine one by one on the ground. There will be specific exercisers that will require you to have an imprint spine.
